Four men have been detained at the Central Regional Police Headquarters following a shooting incident at the Awutu Senya East Constituency Monday.
Registration at the Step to Christ centre in that part of the Constituency was halted after armed gang sacked some prospective voters from the premises amid gunshots.
Properties including motorbikes were also destroyed in the process. No-one has claimed responsibility for the incident, but opposition National Democratic Congress accused sitting MP for the area, Mavis Hawa Koomson of fueling the attack.
“We were registering for the ID card when suddenly a car with bodyguards inside, that is from Hawa Koomson arrived. When they got here, they said anyone not part of the registration exercise should move away.
“There was a Royal bike here and they decided to take it out of the way but the owner said they should leave it for him to take it out personally.
“Then they just started hitting all the bikes around. They also set the fire and started beating the owners of the bikes. Then they just left,” a resident alleged.
He told Accra-based JoyNews, residents have been left in shock due to the incident.
“We actually don’t know what the problem was because here has been very peaceful for the past one week.”
The Central Regional Police Command said Monday night that it is yet to complete investigations and put the four suspects before court.
