Four suspected armed robbers believed to be part of a gang terrorizing commuters in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region have been shot dead during a gunfight with police on the Bekwai-Fomena Highway.
According to reports, the gang had mounted a roadblock along the highway and began attacking passengers traveling between Bekwai and Fomena. A swift response by the police led to a fierce exchange of gunfire with the armed suspects.
Four members of the gang were killed during the operation, while two others who were also shot managed to flee into a nearby bush. A manhunt is currently underway to locate and arrest the fugitives.
“The police responded swiftly to distress calls and engaged the robbers in a fierce gun battle,” an official source revealed.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full details of the attempted robbery and to confirm the identities of the deceased suspects.
Residents, who have been on edge due to a recent surge in highway robberies in the area, expressed relief at the police action. Many commended the security forces for what they described as a “timely intervention.”
The Ashanti South Police Command has confirmed the incident and assured the public that more information will be provided during a press briefing scheduled for Monday, April 14.
