Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, a political analyst, has identified Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, as the ideal candidate to partner with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate ahead of the December elections.

Zaato’s remarks follow a survey by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), which indicated that Opoku Prempeh is the preferred choice among party members as a running mate for Mahamudu Bawumia. Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (20 June), Zaato stated that Napo meets all the criteria of the New Patriotic Party to team up with Bawumia.

“Imagine Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh on a platform with Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman arguing or debating about issues in this country. If you are a New Patriotic Party member, you would want to watch that debate,” Zaato said. He added, “Because not only did both of them head the Education Ministry but he has gone on to head the Energy Ministry, so he ticks all the NPP boxes.”

The NIB survey gathered opinions from 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives. According to the survey, Opoku Prempeh received 76.2% of the responses from the executives polled.

“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, who currently serves as the Minister of Energy and Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, secured 76.2% of the responses from executives polled, making him the leading candidate for the position of running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections,” the survey noted.

“Following him is Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education and MP for the Bosomtwe constituency, who garnered 10.1% of the responses from the polled executives. Other notable personalities the delegates consider as potential running mates include Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former chairman of the Pentecost Church of Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi,” it added.
