A suspected robber who attempted to escape from lawful custody was gunned down by police in Tema, officials say.
The suspect, Joseph Mensah alias Sharp, was arrested on Wednesday, February 10 in connection with a robbery attack on a Sprinter bus carrying 15 workers of B5 Metals Company on December 14, 2020.
The robbers made away with a cash amount of ¢900,000 concealed in a polythene bag meant for payment of wages, the police said.
Investigators say the suspect confessed to being part of land guard activities and had volunteered to recover buried guns used by him and his accomplices for their heinous crimes.
The suspect, who took police investigators to Prampram to retrieve the said weapons attempted to escape but was shot by the police.
He was taken to the Police Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead by medics.His body has been preserved in the morgue.
The Tema Police Regional Command confirmed the development in a statement.
The command also assured residents in and around Tema of its readiness to fight crime and armed robbery in particular and appealed to the public to volunteer credible information leading to arrest and prosecution of all suspected criminals.
