President Mahama promotes five senior officers in the Ghana Armed Forces

President John Dramani Mahama, following the recommendation of the Armed Forces Council, has approved the promotion of five senior officers to the rank of Major General and its equivalent across the Ghana Armed Forces. These appointments took effect on Monday, March 24, 2025, just ahead of the formal transition of the outgoing administration.

 

A statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communication, officially announced the promotions. According to the statement, Major General William Agyapong has been appointed as the Chief of Defence Staff, while Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu will now serve as the Chief of Army Staff.

 

In addition, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing has taken over as the Chief of Naval Staff, with Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong assuming the position of Chief of Air Staff. Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai has been assigned the role of Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.

 

Recognizing the importance of their new roles, President Mahama extended his congratulations and urged the officers to serve with dedication and unity. He emphasized the need for teamwork in protecting the country, stating, “The new Service Chiefs must work loyally and diligently with patriotic courage as a united team cooperating to protect and defend our dear nation, Ghana.”

 

These strategic appointments highlight the government’s commitment to ensuring stability and strong leadership within the Ghana Armed Forces. With these experienced officers at the helm, the military is expected to continue its mission of safeguarding national security.

 

As the country transitions to a new administration, the leadership of the Armed Forces remains critical in maintaining peace and order. The newly promoted officers are now tasked with upholding the high standards of discipline and service required for the security and defense of Ghana.
