The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formed an 11-member committee to investigate the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections. The committee is chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, and has been tasked with presenting its findings to the National Council within three months.
According to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP’s General Secretary, the committee will focus on reviewing the party’s internal elections and campaign strategies. “Their mandate includes identifying the challenges that led to our loss and recommending solutions to strengthen the party for the future,” Kodua stated.
The 2024 presidential election was won by former President John Dramani Mahama, who secured a return to office after a closely contested race. On December 9, the Electoral Commission (EC) declared Mahama the winner with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast. His main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, received 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
Mahama’s victory also marked a significant parliamentary gain for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party secured over 180 seats, including several constituencies previously controlled by the NPP, giving the NDC a clear majority and reinforcing Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to assume the presidency.
The NPP’s committee is expected to play a critical role in addressing the internal and external factors that contributed to the party’s defeat, laying the groundwork for future success.
