Joseph Cudjoe, Minister for Public Enterprises, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equipping regulatory bodies like the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to fulfill their roles effectively.

Speaking at the FDA Annual Stakeholders Meeting on August 10, 2024, Cudjoe likened the FDA’s work to a divine responsibility, highlighting its crucial role in safeguarding public health. He stated, “If you critically examine and consider the work of the FDA, you will realize that our very existence and well-being depend on how well the FDA can ensure food and medical safety.”

Cudjoe emphasized the significance of the FDA, noting that over 80% of diseases affecting and killing humans are related to food and drugs, making the FDA’s role “indispensable.” He added, “We cannot afford not to eat or drink water, and we do these things every day. Someone selling food may unintentionally sell something harmful. It is impractical for each person to test what they consume regularly.”

He praised the FDA’s ongoing efforts despite challenges like salary and staffing issues, acknowledging their critical role in public health. “Imagine the scale of diseases and deaths were it not for the FDA’s regulatory activities focusing on consumer protection,” Cudjoe said. He concluded by stressing the importance of a healthy workforce for national development, saying, “Your operation is critical for the country’s functioning from every sector of the economy.”

Dr. Delese Mimi Darko, CEO of the FDA, echoed Cudjoe’s sentiments, pledging to continue the Authority’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of the public. The annual stakeholder meeting aimed to update attendees on the FDA’s 2023 regulatory activities and achievements.
