The three major labour unions representing public universities in Ghana, SSA-UoG, FUSSAG, and TEWU, have decided to suspend the nearly month-old industrial action.

The unions declared the strike on 17 January 2024, and have been in discussions with the Employer and the National Labour Commission (NLC) to address the issues leading to the impasse.

During a meeting on February 1, 2024, the employer acknowledged the concerns raised by the unions including the unilateral variation of the conditions of service for university staff.

It has thus restored the overtime allowance and settled all outstanding Tier-2 Pension arrears. Additionally, assurances have been given to address all outstanding issues related to Tier 2.

The unions decided to suspend the strike after an emergency National Executives Council (NEC) meeting was held at KNUST on February 7, 2024, “to evaluate the state of the strike.”

“NEC passed a resolution to suspend the strike and engage the Government on the roadmap for the payment of the three per cent penalty and the recalculation of accrued interest from 2010 to 2016. Thus, we wish to announce that the ongoing industrial action is suspended with immediate effect,” the statement directed.

The unions express gratitude to all stakeholders for their efforts in resolving the industrial action and extend thanks to their members for their support in working towards securing improved conditions of service.

The directive to suspend the strike is effective immediately, and “local executives are urged to disseminate this information for compliance.”
