Ghanaian football icon, Charles Taylor, has voiced a compelling argument for the inclusion of Asante Kotoko’s talented midfielder, Richmond Lamptey, in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Lamptey’s stellar performance against Hearts of Oak during the recent Super Clash has ignited widespread support from football enthusiasts, political figures, and pundits, all clamoring for his presence in Ghana’s AFCON roster.

Drawing from his own experiences playing for both Hearts of Oak and Kotoko, Taylor asserted that Lamptey’s prowess surpasses that of certain players anticipated to secure a spot in the AFCON squad.

Taylor, a respected figure in Ghanaian football, highlighted Lamptey’s exceptional ball-carrying and passing skills, boldly stating that they outshine those of Baba Iddrisu and Edmund Addo, the latter having received a recent call-up according to Chris Hughton’s latest announcement.

Taylor underscored the scarcity of players possessing Lamptey’s distinctive profile within the Black Stars, emphasizing that Hughton should recognize the fortuitous timing of Lamptey’s outstanding form. In an interview with Angel TV, Taylor articulated, “His footballing skills are a bit different from what we have now, and that’s why I believe that he’s ahead of the pack. I believe he can get a position in the Black Stars because any coach who is determined to win something will like him.”

Furthermore, Taylor’s analysis contended that Lamptey’s playing style, characterized by adept ball distribution and the ability to connect with strikers seamlessly, sets him apart from his counterparts. Expressing his preference for Lamptey over other midfield options, Taylor asserted, “There are some players in the Ghana Premier League who play like those abroad. He can play with the Black Stars players. We’ve been complaining about the quality of midfielders, and now we have been lucky to find a player in the Ghana Premier League.”

As anticipation builds for the AFCON squad announcement, scheduled for January 3, Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Black Stars, faces the challenging task of selecting a 55-man provisional squad.

The football community eagerly awaits to see if Richmond Lamptey will be among those chosen to represent Ghana on the grand stage of the 2023 AFCON.
