The Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Samuel Awuku (Sammi Awuku), has officially resigned from his position, citing his new role as the Member of Parliament for Akwapim North as the reason for his decision.

His resignation takes effect on 13 January.

In his resignation letter addressed to President John Dramani Mahama and copied to key government officials, including Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mr. Awuku stated:

“I have been elected as a Member of Parliament for the Akwapim North constituency and have been duly sworn in to represent my constituents. In the light of this new responsibility, I wish to focus my efforts on serving as a Member of Parliament.”

Mr. Awuku, who was appointed as Director General of the NLA in August 2021 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and called for the appointment of a replacement to ensure a seamless transition.

“I kindly request that you appoint a replacement for the position of Director General to facilitate a smooth transition and handover of responsibilities,” he wrote.

About Sammi Awuku

A former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku transitioned into public service when he assumed leadership at the NLA. Under his tenure, the Authority pursued innovative approaches to revenue generation and public engagement, building on its mandate to organize lotteries for national development.

About the National Lottery Authority (NLA)

Established in 1958 as the Department of National Lotteries, the NLA evolved into an autonomous public service institution with a monopoly over the organization of lotteries in Ghana. Its mandate, as outlined in the Lotto and Betting Act (Act 94) and later the National Lotto Act (Act 722), has been to raise revenue to support national development.

Over the years, the NLA has become one of the key contributors to government revenue and employment creation in Ghana, providing a platform for creativity and innovation in the lottery sector.
