A joint task force made up of personnel from the First Infantry Battalion under the Southern Command and officers from the Eastern Regional Police Command has apprehended seven individuals engaged in illegal mining activities in the Eastern Region.
The operation, led by Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey, covered several areas affected by illegal mining, including Akyem Kubriso in Lower West Akyem, Atewa West, Akyem Takyiman in the Kwaebibirim District, Ayensuano, and Osino in the Fanteakwa South District.
During the operation, the team seized numerous items used for galamsey. Among the confiscated equipment were several excavators, 16 water pumps, 24 excavator batteries, and a chainsaw machine. Additionally, they recovered two pump action guns, three single-barrel rifles, washing carpets, and a gold weighing scale.
Addressing the media after the exercise on Saturday, April 12, Minister Rita Akosua Awatey reiterated her determination to put an end to illegal mining in the region. “I am committed to halting illegal mining, popularly referred to as galamsey, in the Eastern Region,” she stated.
She also issued a stern warning to those involved in such activities, noting that the team will remain active in the region and extend their efforts to track down the individuals financing illegal mining. “The team will continue to remain in the region and pursue financiers of galamsey,” she added.
