Ghana’s National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has revealed that approximately 1.1mn small arms and light weapons evade adequate tracing or documentation in the West African country,
This alarming revelation, amidst a total circulation of 2.3mn weapons, poses a significant threat to national security, Frank Boateng Asumani, head of the national arms marking programme at the commission said at a public forum in Accra.
He said efforts are underway to address this proliferation as one of West Africa’s stable democracies heads into a crucial election in December.
“Currently, we have 2.3mn small and light weapons in circulation, out of which 1.2mn are legally registered, and the remaining 1.1mn cannot be accounted for,” Asumani said.
The commission is actively seeking funding to assess the extent of proliferation within the system. These unaccounted-for weapons include AK47s, pistols, pump-action guns, and locally manufactured firearms, he added.
