A South African national attempted suicide on Ghana’s deep waters Tuesday when he allegedly jumped off an oil vessel into the ocean.

The worker on board Ghana’s first oil vessel known as FPSO Kwame Nkrumah was immediately rescued by divers, local station in Takoradi Empire FM reports.

The rescuers used tugboats to salvage the situation. The SA national has since been medevacked (airlifted) to the West African Rescue Association (WARA) health facility in the capital Accra for medical attention.

The development is rare in the young oil country. Ghana first discovered oil in 2007 and became a producer in 2010, helping to speed up the rate of economic growth. It is believed to have five to seven billion barrels in reserves.
