Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin on Monday (22 July), expelled Member of Parliament Kwaku Afriyie from the chamber following a dispute over remarks deemed disrespectful.

Afriyie, representing Sefwi Wiawso and affiliated with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), was held in contempt of the Chair after criticizing Bagbin’s comments.

During the proceedings, Speaker Bagbin announced the nomination of new Supreme Court judges and stated, “In giving you the information, I have given you an idea of the expectations of the people of Ghana. That is for you to consider as part of the report and the House to decide as to whether we will approve or disapprove those nominations.”

Afriyie expressed dissatisfaction with the Speaker’s remarks, describing them as prejudicial.

“And I believe that as one representing the good people of Sefwi Wiawso, it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you have said”, he argued.

The Speaker, clearly agitated, responded, “Marshal, take him out of the House. I will not entertain such disrespect. It lies in my mouth.”

Despite initial resistance from Afriyie, he was eventually removed from the chamber by the Marshal as directed by Speaker Bagbin, who emphasized his commitment to maintaining decorum in the House.
