Former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo has expressed strong disapproval over allegations that Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, distributed food during the Special Voting exercise on December 2 at the Legon Police Station polling center.

Mr. Domelevo called for an immediate halt to such practices, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process ahead of the general elections on December 7. He criticized the alleged act as a violation of the principles of fairness and transparency in the electoral system.

Speaking at a public forum titled “Curbing Illicit Financial Flows Through Accountable Governance: The Role of Media,” the former Auditor-General urged political parties to avoid actions that could be perceived as attempts to sway voters or election officials.

“The shame goes to our police and security officers. If they are collecting that, what if voters on Saturday are collecting money to vote? Will they have the moral authority to arrest them?” Domelevo questioned.

He continued: “When you collect food, assuming it is maybe GHȼ100, and I also collect cash GHȼ1000, will you be able to arrest me? It is a shame, a big shame to our security officers, the media, and people who should know better. They are even holding it and standing in the queue. I found it very shameful.”

Domelevo also described witnessing security personnel, including prison officers, openly accepting the food as disappointing. “I saw prison officers, I saw others, and said, what is this? That action should not be tolerated,” he concluded.

His comments serve as a stern reminder to all stakeholders to uphold the credibility of Ghana’s electoral process and ensure free and fair elections.
