Sports Minister mourns the passing of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju

Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation, has expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. The tragic incident occurred following a light-heavyweight bout against Ghanaian fighter Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

 

In a statement released on March 31, 2025, Adams conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Government of Ghana.

 

He described Gabriel as a gifted and passionate athlete who displayed exceptional courage in the ring, emphasizing that his passing is a significant loss to the boxing community.

 

“We deeply empathise with the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), the entire Nigerian boxing fraternity, and the global boxing community over this irreplaceable loss,” Adams stated.

 

He highlighted that Gabriel’s tragic death is a sobering reminder of the unpredictable nature of boxing.

 

As the authorities await the official medical report on the cause of death, Adams reassured the public that the Ministry is fully cooperating with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted.

 

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to enhancing safety measures for athletes to prevent such incidents in the future.

 

The Minister extended his thoughts and prayers to Gabriel’s family, friends, and the boxing fraternity, urging the global boxing community to come together to honor his memory and advocate for the wellbeing of athletes.

 

Adams concluded with a solemn tribute, saying, “May Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju’s soul rest in perfect peace.”
