The King of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn, has gone into self-isolation inside a luxury hotel in Germany. He has booked the entire hotel for himself and 20 female concubines.

The novel coronavirus outbreak has compelled people all across the world to stay inside their homes, go out only when necessary and practice self-isolation. And the King of Thailand decided to self-isolate in Germany.

The king was given special permission to stay in the luxury hotel, Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl in Bavaria, a four-star property in Germany, despite the lockdown rules. He booked the entire hotel, reports Metro.

According to the German tabloid Bild, the Thai King moved in with 20 concubines and some servants. The reports also suggest that the king’s initial plan was to bring with him an even larger group of servants, but out of those, 119 were sent home as they were suspected to be novel coronavirus-positive.

As the news of the King opting to self-isolate in Germany went viral, people back in Thailand took to Twitter to vent their anger. As a result, ‘Why do we need a king?’ began trending on Twitter. However, speaking against the monarch is an offence in Thailand. The country’s lese-majeste law, one of the strictest in the world, forbids any kind of insult of the king or the queen.

The current king of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn has had four wives: Princess Soamsawali (1977-1993); Yuvadhida Polpraserth (1994-1996); Srirasmi Suwadee (2001-2014); and Queen Suthida.

As of now, Thailand has reported 1,524 coronavirus-positive cases and nine fatalities.
