A transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Tema Region was vandalised and stripped of vital components by thieves, leading to significant disruptions in power supply and financial losses for the company.
The 100KVA, 33/0.433KV transformer, valued at approximately GHC75,000, was discovered damaged during a routine patrol on the morning of August 31, 2024. The patrol was initiated to address a power outage issue when ECG officials found the transformer at Asutsuare Junction had been toppled, with several parts removed and others strewn around the site.
Regional Engineer for ECG Tema Region, Ing. Michael Buabin, expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the impact on both customers and the company. “The damages to these transformers cause inconveniences to customers, as some had been without supply due to the damage,” he stated. Buabin added that the company now faces unplanned expenses, as funds intended for other projects must be redirected to replace the stolen transformer. “The damaged transformer alone is worth about GHC75,000, and the associated components will likely push the total cost over GHC100,000—funds that could have been used for other developmental projects,” he explained.
Buabin appealed to the public for assistance in curbing such incidents.
“We urge the public to support the ECG by reporting any individuals seen damaging or attempting to sell such items to the police, as this can help prevent future occurrences,” he said.
The ECG officials reported the incident to the Doryumu Police Station, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.
