Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, has issued his first public statement since the election results were announced. Acknowledging the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s victory, he reflected on the outcome and called for unity and introspection within the party.
“The 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections resulted in a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). This was not the outcome we, in the NPP, envisaged; but we respect the verdict of the Ghanaian people. To Ghanaians, we have heard you clearly and with humility we accept. We will work with you to get it right,” Dr. Prempeh said, as he responded to the NDC’s victory, with John Mahama securing 56.6% of the vote against the NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr. Prempeh, affectionately called NAPO, expressed gratitude for his political journey and the opportunity to serve. “I am grateful to the Lord Almighty, the giver of life, for bringing me this far and for the honour of this opportunity given me to serve my Party and Ghana,” he noted.
He also disclosed that he has had in-depth discussions with the NPP’s flag bearer, Dr. Bawumia, about the party’s defeat and hinted at further reflections. “I have had extensive discussions with our flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to reflect on the outcome of the elections and, in good time, we shall reflect further as a political party on the causes of our 2024 election loss,” he stated.
Dr. Prempeh extended his gratitude to those who supported him during the campaign. “I am grateful to HE, the Vice-President for nominating me as his running mate, and to the NPP leadership for the overwhelming support I received. I thank the Party faithfuls, my team, family, friends and countless others for their confidence reposed in the ticket and for this enterprise,” he added.
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in the party’s ability to rebuild and regain the trust of Ghanaians. “I believe in the NPP’s values, ideals and traditions. As we go into a period of honest introspection and reflection on this electoral verdict, I am confident that we will emerge stronger, and bounce back to win the trust, confidence, support and affection of Ghanaians. May God bless Ghana and the NPP, and make us all resilient and strong. Thank you,” he concluded.
Dr. Prempeh’s remarks mark the start of a period of reflection and strategic planning for the NPP as it seeks to recover from its defeat in the 2024 elections.
