A bloody clash between members of the ruling New Patriotic Party and the largest opposition National Democratic Congress in the Asawasi Constituency has left three persons injured, local media reported Friday.

The two parties reportedly pelted stones at the Asokore Mampong Municipal Office of the Electoral Commission as potential voters and officials fled for safety.

Properties inluding vehicles were vandalized during the ensuing melee between both parties.

Media reports suggest both parties had engaged in disagreements at the registration center since the start of the process.

A similar incident was reported on Thursday, June 27 after an altercation between members of the two political parties stalled the registration process for hours.

A heavily armed police and military contingent was stationed at the center to maintain order.

Friday evening’s development comes after EC officials and security heads in the Ashanti Region met leadership of the parties in the Constituency to get them to control their members to ensure a smooth exercise.

MP accused of assault

Speaking to newsmen, one of the injured victims alleged that she was physically assaulted by Member of Parliament for Asawase Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka when she intervened to challenge a young lady who claimed some applicants were being registered at midnight at the Municipal Assembly’s office.

The injured are receiving treatment at the Manhyia District Hospital after they lodged a formal complaint at the Asokore Mampong Police station on the incident.

It is expected that armed Police personnel would be stationed at the center to prevent trouble.

It is not immediately known whether or not an arrest has been made.

Over 74,000 persons have since been registered in the Ashanti Region as of Tuesday, June 25, 2019. Over 63,000 voters have been registered in the regional capital alone.
