Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has given assurance to the public that transport fares will remain unchanged for now, even though recent fuel price reductions have sparked calls for a fare review.
The assurance comes amid increasing public expectations for a decrease in fares, especially following earlier warnings from transport unions to hike prices when fuel costs were rising.
Addressing the issue, Mr. Nikpe noted that the Ministry is actively engaging with all relevant stakeholders, including transport unions and operators. He explained that fare adjustments are not made arbitrarily but are based on a standard pricing model.
> “I am in constant touch with the unions and transport operators. We have a formula in which we use to either increase or reduce prices, and we have not gotten there yet,” he stated.
He further emphasized that maintaining stability in the transport sector requires strong collaboration and understanding among all parties involved.
> “We are in good touch. We are working together, and Ghanaians should be rest assured that prices will be kept for some time before any of the adjustments will be made,” the Minister added.
The Ministry’s current position seeks to balance the needs of commuters with the operational realities of transport providers, as talks continue over when and how fare adjustments might be implemented.
