The Campus acting Finance Officer at the University of Education—Winneba has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the university — following months of ongoing tension with the education institution.
Vice Chancellor, Rev. Father Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni and two others including Mr Francis Obeng, a purportedly appointed financial officer of the University— have been named as defendants in the suit.
The development comes days after a new governing council of the University was constituted by Education Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
In the suit dated September 9, 2019, the plaintiff, Mr Bruno Bajuase Chirani said the procedure of his dismissal constituted a breach of his contract with the campus.
He also accuses the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni of causing financial loss to the state.
“Plaintiff says that he became a target of the 2nd Defendant, when he the plaintiff, started advising the 2nd Defendant about payments of huge sums of monies particularly to a certain lawyer called Paa Kwesi Abaidoo Esq and which conduct has been causing financial loss to the state”
“Plaintiff says that per the records amounts in excess of Four Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS 400,000.00) has so far been paid to the lawyer although the 1st Defendant has employed the services of an external solicitor in the person of Mr Peter Zwennes Esq and a team of in-house lawyers, who are being paid from the state coffers every month”, parts of the statement of claim read.
“Plaintiff avers that these payments to Paa Kwesi Abaidoo Esq never went through procurement processes and yet State funds were paid to the said lawyer without any contract”, the statement of claim sighted by Dailymailgh.com continues.
Describing the Vice Chancellor as “tyrant”, Mr Chirani is seeking an order from the court to conduct a forensic audit of all payments made under the stewardship of the Vice Chancellor and also among others declare the position of the finance officer not vacant.
