The University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa has won the maiden Tertiary Edition of the Gas Challenge Competition organized by the Ghana National Gas Company.
The competition which is part of the company’s effort of bridging the gap between industry and academia as well as educating the public at large on the operations of the company as well as gas related matters.
On 8th October, 2019 the Tertiary Institutions’ Edition which started with Zone One, saw the University of Ghana emerging as finalist after beating Regional Maritime University and Ghana Technology University College. The second zone followed on 15th October, 2019 and saw the University of Mines and Technology emerging as winners after a triumph over Takoradi Technical University and University of Cape Coast. The last qualification zone was on 26th October, 2019 and had Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology came tops in a contest with the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani and the All Nations University, Koforidua.
The finale which was held at the College of Physicians and Surgeons auditorium saw a packed room of supporters who had come to cheer their respective teams. The five rounds of the quiz which was heated saw University of Mines and Technology overtaking the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to win with 91 points as against 80 points and 64 point for the 2nd runner up, University of Ghana.
The CEO of Ghana National Gas Company, Dr. Ben K.D. Asante in his opening remarks accentuated the importance of such a project and indicated his commitment to bridging the gap between academia and industry when it comes to gas industry.
The event was graced by Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam, Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Christine Churcher, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Company, Nana Owusu Ansah Ababio and Togbi Joachim Acolatse V, Board Members, Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan, MP Ayawaso West Wuogon, Hon. George Mireku Duker, MP Tarkwa Nsuaem Hon. Kwesi Bonso , DCE Ellembele district , Hon. Sylvester Tetteh, CEO, National Youth Aythority, Mr. Akwasi Frimpong, Winter Olympian and Brand Ambassador for Ghana Gas , Mr. Kobby Annan , Deputy CEO , Gaming Commission, Mr. Rolland Affal Monnie, GJA President, Mr. Kwame Gyantua, an Energy Consultant and Lawyer, Mr. Richard Ahiagba, Executive Director, Danquah Institute , Hon. Kwadwo Baah Agyemang , Board Chairman, National Sports Authority and a host of others
It is worthy to note that the Gas Challenge was in partnership with the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Education, Ghana Journalist Association, National Youth Authority, Diaspora Television Network, Ghana Broadcasting Association, Graphic Communication Group and TV Africa.
The winners of the competition, UMAT took home a cash price of GH 10,000.00, laptops for all contestants, a citation and winners plaque as well as a refurbishment of a lab in their school and an 8 week fully sponsored industrial attachment with the company’s operational site. The 1st runners up took home a cash price of GH 5,000.00, laptops for the contestants, citation and plaque for the institution. The 2nd runner up, University of Ghana took home a cash price of GH 3,000.00, laptops for the participants and plague and citation for the institution.
Snr. Manager for Government Relations and Chairperson for the Planning committee, Ms. Augustina Asare Osei thanked the Board, CEO and Management of the company for making the competition a success. She further acknowledged committee members who were responsible for various schedules in making the event prosperous. She commended the partnering institutions for their endorsement and support in the period.
The finale the event saw other side attractions of a spoken word on the environment and a musical performance.
