UTAG-UCC blasts ‘unlawful’ dismissal of Vice-Chancellor

The University of Cape Coast Branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UCC) has condemned the University Council’s decision to terminate the appointment of Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice-Chancellor.

UTAG-UCC has asserted that the Council Chair’s action is unilateral and not recognized, as it contravenes ongoing court proceedings that restrain the Chairman and Council from taking such action.

“The letter from the Council Chair dated 31st July 2024, stating the termination of the Vice-Chancellor’s renewed term, is improper and without merit. The claims that the renewal breaches the University’s Statutes and the Constitution are unfounded.

“The renewal was conducted with full consideration of all legal and statutory requirements. On this basis, the action of the Council Chair is arbitrary, capricious, and devoid of any legal justification. We reject it outrightly.”

Prof. Boampong’s four-year term as Vice-Chancellor ended on July 31, 2024, but his appointment was purportedly extended by two years.

However, the Council Chair, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, declared the extension null and void, stating that a decision on the extension is yet to be made.

UTAG-UCC, on Thursday, August 1, 2024, called on the Council Chair to withdraw the termination letter, accusing him of demonstrating bad faith and a propensity for unilateral decision-making, which is detrimental to the university’s governance.

The Association has urged the government to withdraw the Chairman’s appointment and has assured the university community that it is monitoring the situation closely and will take necessary actions to protect the institution’s integrity and members’ rights.

UTAG-UCC has emphasized the need for the University Council to adhere strictly to legal and statutory frameworks governing the university, warning that any actions contrary to these frameworks will be met with resistance to uphold justice and fairness.
