Former President John Mahama has expressed enthusiasm regarding Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s ruling to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate views this development as promising for the party as it approaches the upcoming elections.

The Speaker’s ruling follows a motion filed by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, which sought to declare the seats of four Members of Parliament vacant after they opted to contest the upcoming elections as independent candidates.

On the floor of the House on Thursday (17 October), the Speaker officially declared the four seats vacant. This ruling alters the balance of Ghana’s hung parliament, previously leaning slightly in favour of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), which was supported by Independent Member of Parliament Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

Reacting to this shift, Mahama described the ruling as historic, expressing optimism about the NDC’s future prospects. He stated that the party’s new majority status in Parliament is a positive indicator as they prepare for victory in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

“For me, God is even showing a sign of what is going to happen because even before we have cast one single ballot, the NDC has become the majority,” he remarked.

However, Mahama cautioned that the party must solidify this position by performing well in the upcoming elections.

“That is when the people of Ghana are going to cast their votes, and I know that December 7, 2024, is going to be a watershed event that will change the course of Ghana’s history”, he emphasised.

“Ghana needs change”, he asserted claiming that the NPP had “squeezed our hands and took four of the constituencies away from us using fraudulent means.”

“God works in mysterious ways,” he added. “Can you imagine that in the twilight to the end of their administration, God has given the NDC back the majority it won in 2020? There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the NDC is winning the 2024 elections.”
