Angry residents of Asamankese in the Eastern region pelted stones at fire fighters for arriving late to douse fire at the Asamankese Market Tuesday night.
The irate youth, according to eyewitnesses, blocked the major roads in the municipality to register their grievances against the fire personnel.
Some shops including a cold store and mattress shops were gutted by fire leading to loss of thousands of Ghana Cedis.
The Kade fire officers had to take cover at the Asamankese Divisional Police Command to preserve their lives.
Eastern regional police spokesperson DSP Ebenezer Tetteh explained the fire tender in Asamankese was not functioning hence the delay.
“The information is that by the time the fire officers got to the ground, the fire had been put off by the indigenes themselves and that got them incensed and they started pelting the fire officers with stones,” DSP Tetteh told Citi News.
He said calm has been restored.
