A section of Ghana’s popular Makola Shopping Mall at the Central Business District in Accra caught fire Friday.

Fire fighters are at the scene with their tenders to douse the inferno which has sparked chaos at the busy trading arena.

Eyewitnesses believe the fire started from an underground section of the Mall.

“Some rooms in the first and second floors [of the mall] are on fire and we need re-enforcement from the police to control the crowd,” an eyewitness Naa Dedei told Accra-based Starr FM.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

The Makola Market is a renowned market place and shopping district in the centre of the city of Accra. A wide array of products is sold in the markets and its surrounding streets, from car parts to land snails. Dominated by women traders, the market sells fresh produce, manufactured and imported foods, clothes, shoes, tools, medicines, and pots and pans.
