Local staff of Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra on Wednesday laid down their tools over what they termed as “racist treatment” by management.
The aggrieved workers chanted war songs amidst drumming to protest at the Hotel’s reception over unfair treatment against blacks, accusing management of protecting expats.
According to them, an expat was caught allegedly stealing gold bars but have been left off the hook while local employees who previously stole food items had been dismissed.
“…The whole thing is about equal rights…. we are just fighting for our equal rights. We are in the house and most at times when staff take something from here whether milo or one Lipton, you will be sacked. Sometimes you will be taken to the police station. And there is this situation that a manager who is a white has stolen gold bar from the hotel and now they are trying to cover it and that is what we are fighting. That the lady should be sacked,” a leader of the local workers David Owusu told Accra-based Citi FM.
The protest disrupted business as guests were left stranded. Management of the hotel is yet to officially respond to the claims.
