The Volta River Authority (VRA) has donated essential relief items to support individuals affected by the 2023 controlled spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams. The relief, including 300 bags of maize, 200 bags of gari, 150 bags of beans, 300 bags of rice, 150 boxes of oil, and 100 boxes of mackerel, was presented to the North District Assembly.

The donation aims to aid those still residing in safe havens across Mepe, Battor, Tokpo, and Bakpa in the North Tongu, Shia-Osudoku, and Central Tongu districts. Mr. Benjamin Arhin Sackey, Director for Environment and Sustainable Development, highlighted VRA’s dedication to the well-being of the affected individuals, emphasizing the collaboration with NADMO and other agencies for comprehensive restoration efforts.

“The VRA remains committed to working with NADMO, the District Assemblies, and response agencies to ensure that the affected persons are restored,” Sackey stated.

North Tongu District Chief Executive, Hon. Divine Osborn Fenu, expressed gratitude for VRA’s ongoing support, reiterating the government’s commitment to the full recovery of all affected persons.

Seji Saji, Deputy Director General (Technical & Reforms) at NADMO, noted that some individuals remain in safe havens and highlighted efforts to provide necessary support. He mentioned that the Ministry of Works and Housing is constructing resettlement facilities and the Ministries of Food and Agriculture are distributing seedlings and fertilizers to aid in livelihood recovery.

“We hope these buildings will be finished in the shortest possible time so those in the safe havens can be accommodated to resume their full lives,” Mr. Saji added.

The team also visited the safe havens, distributing the donated items to the affected persons, further demonstrating VRA and NADMO’s commitment to supporting the victims.
