Seven persons have been killed after an illegal mining pit collapsed on Thursday at Wassa-Manso in the Mpohor District of the Western Region.
Local media reported that the miners were secretly prospecting for gold since dawn until the pit collapsed at about 11am local time.
An excavator which was spotted at the scene was used to recover all seven victims as residents joined the police in the rescue mission.
Their bodies have since been deposited at the morgue at the time of filing this report.
Illegal mining is rampant in the west African nation of Ghana and the current Akufo-Addo administration has waged a war on it. A taskforce known as Operation Vanguard – comprising police and military – has been patrolling illegal mining zones to stop the act.
