The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has expressed disappointment over the government’s recent release of GH¢25 million to settle part of its GH¢118 million debt. The Council has stated that the amount is insufficient to facilitate the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, which remain delayed due to financial constraints.
John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, highlighted the gravity of the situation during a media interaction, stressing that the funds provided barely cover the Council’s pressing needs.
“Obviously, that [the GH¢25 million] was just a drop in the ocean as far as the amount of money required for the job we are supposed to do is concerned,” he said. “We indicated to the minister earlier that we owed our technicians GH¢25 million, which we had to pay before they even started to work on the machines. Besides, there are other operations that we have to do.”
Mr. Kapi further explained that the GH¢25 million would be exhausted almost immediately if WAEC decided to address the arrears owed to technicians. “If we decide to invite the technicians today or even tomorrow, all they are going to ask for is the outstanding payment. And so all of that GH¢25 million will go,” he stated.
The delay in releasing the WASSCE results has sparked widespread concern among stakeholders, including students, parents, and educational institutions, as WAEC continues to grapple with financial challenges that disrupt its operations.
