The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has attributed the delay in releasing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results to unresolved financial challenges.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, December 19, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, disclosed that the Council is unable to finalize the results due to outstanding debts owed to technicians responsible for maintaining critical grading equipment.

“The results are not ready. We issued a statement earlier highlighting some of the challenges we are currently facing. Unfortunately, these challenges persist because we have not been able to secure the necessary funds to address them,” Mr. Kapi explained.

A key issue is the malfunctioning of specialized scanners used for marking objective questions, which are vital for the grading process. Repairs on these scanners have been stalled because the technicians have suspended their services over unpaid arrears.

“We needed to repair our scanners because we owe the technicians GH¢25 million, and they have withdrawn their services until we make some financial commitments,” Mr. Kapi stated. He further explained that while private schools pay examination fees directly to WAEC, the government is responsible for funding public school candidates. “Until the monies are paid, we are unable to release the results,” he added.

The situation has drawn attention from the Minority in Parliament, who are calling for the Finance and Education Ministers to be summoned. They want the ministers to address the government’s debt to WAEC and provide a resolution to ensure the timely release of the examination results.
