Ghana’s Black Stars B began their WAFU title defense with a narrow win over Gambia by a lone goal.

Accra Hearts of Oak striker Joseph Esso got the only goal of the game to book a quarterfinals berth for the 2017 Champions.

Ghana came close to scoring in the 30th minutes mark when skipper of the side Shafiu Mumuni struck the crossbar with a powerful attempt.

The Stars dominated the early exchanges of the game but failed to stamp their authority in the first half as it ended goalless.

Esso broke the virginity of the game with 23 minutes left on the clock to play when he connected a cross from Ghana’s left back Moro Ibrahim from close range.

On the 80th minute, the Gambian were awarded a controversial spot kick but failed to convert from 12 yards as I. Cham hit the post with his strike.

Ghana held onto their lead as the game finished 1-0.

The Black Stars will now face Burkina Faso a side that beat them in the CHAN qualifiers at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the quarter final.
