The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored calm in Walewale following a disturbance during the vote-counting process in the rerun of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primary for the Walewale Constituency.
The disruption led to the arrest of Kamara Bawah, who was detained for allegedly damaging several ballot papers. Bawah is currently in police custody and is assisting with investigations.
In response to the incident, security in Walewale and surrounding areas has been intensified to ensure peace and stability. Earlier, Citi News North East Regional correspondent, Mohammed Aminu Alabira, reported that the election had faced yet another disruption.
The day was marked by scattered unrest, including reports of military personnel assaulting individuals at the polling centre. One of the aspirants, Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, and his team had previously expressed concerns about the venue, highlighting a lack of official communication regarding the election arrangements.
Although many expected the sorting and counting of ballots to occur in an open space, the process was conducted behind closed doors inside a church. The chairman of the election committee reported that an unknown individual disrupted the counting, leading to their arrest.
Dr. Kabiru voiced his frustration with the conduct of the election, questioning the fairness of the NPP’s internal democratic procedures. His supporter, constituency chairman Mohammed Muniru Janda, added that Kabiru appeared to be leading during the sorting process before the disruption occurred.
Janda also raised doubts about the security of the ballots, expressing concerns over the integrity of the rerun.
