The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has strongly criticized Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, stating that he is unqualified to lecture the NDC on democratic principles.
Asiedu Nketiah’s comments were in response to accusations made by Afenyo-Markin during an interview on Thursday, December 12, 2024. In the interview, the Majority Leader alleged that the NDC leadership deliberately obstructed the re-collation exercise at the Tesano Police Training School. He further urged the NDC to respect the Electoral Commission (EC) and follow due process to ensure a smooth re-collation.
Addressing the claims during a press conference on Friday, December 13, 2024, Asiedu Nketiah dismissed Afenyo-Markin’s assertions, maintaining that the NDC acted within its legal rights. He also criticized the Majority Leader for attempting to judge the party’s actions.
“I heard Afenyo-Markin, who has rejected the position of a minority leader, is now on his way to becoming a micro-minority leader, bragging that he belongs to a party of the rule of law,” Asiedu Nketiah said.
He further argued that the NDC did not need lectures on democracy from Afenyo-Markin, pointing out the NPP’s own questionable track record. “Who doesn’t know the NPP? We in the National Democratic Congress do not need lectures from Afenyo-Markin about democracy at all,” he stated.
Asiedu Nketiah concluded with a sharp rebuke: “Indeed, if there were any need for lectures in impunity, then we will invite him as a lecturer. But if it is about democracy, he must shut up.”
This exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the NDC and the NPP as both parties contest electoral processes and outcomes.
