The Wenchi West District of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church in the Mid-West Ghana Conference, Bono Region, has honored 20 girls aged 13 to 16 for preserving their virginity. The recognition took place during a thanksgiving service held alongside the observation of the first Sabbath of the year in Wenchi.
The girls were each presented with an undisclosed amount of money to support their upkeep as part of the church’s initiative to encourage moral values.
Mrs. Nana Amponsah Poku, District Coordinator of the Young Adventist Women Ministries, praised the girls for their commitment and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their decision.
“God created you uniquely beautiful, and you must not allow anybody to lure and break your virginity until you marry,” she advised. She also urged the girls to choose their friends wisely in 2025 and beyond, emphasizing the importance of maintaining their values.
Mrs. Poku highlighted the ministry’s mission to guide young girls and women toward becoming responsible adults in society. She called for a revival of traditional customs, such as puberty rites, that once played a crucial role in preserving virginity and curbing teenage pregnancies.
“The ancient Bragoro or Dipo rite was very essential in preserving girls’ virginity and controlling teenage pregnancies inimical to the growth and development of young girls and women,” she noted.
Pastor Andrews Dua Bour Kyere, Associate Pastor of the Wenchi West District SDA Church, also lauded the girls for their example and encouraged others in the church to remain pure and focus on their education.
Some of the honorees expressed their joy at being recognized and thanked the church for its role in their spiritual and personal development. They pledged to uphold the values instilled in them as they navigate life.
