The Ghana Police Service is investigating a viral video of an officer slapping a woman at a registration center.

In the clip, which has been shared widely online, the officer is seen in a heated altercation with the woman who was in queue with dozens of others, waiting for their turn to register.

It is unclear what triggered the argument.

As a concerned man at the venue decides to calm tempers, the amateur footage shows the officer as he reaches out and slaps the middle-aged woman to the amazement of onlookers.

Others intervene to restrain the woman from confronting the peace officer as he is pulled away by some men at the yet-to-be-identified site.

The incident has generated uproar on social media. In a statement on Saturday, the police said its attention has been drawn to the matter and will update the public in due course.

“The attention of the Police Administration has been drawn to a viral video circulating on social media in which a police officer is seen slapping a woman at a place believed to be a Voters Registration Center,” the Ghana Police Service wrote on Facebook.

“The Police Service wishes to assure the public that it has commenced investigations into the matter and will provide facts of the matter to in due time, all should be assured,” the statement ended.
