The Western Region faces a significant challenge in maintaining an effective water supply for continuous firefighting due to ongoing illegal gold mining (galamsey) activities in water bodies.
The revelation came from ACFO I Frederick Ohemeng, the Western Regional Fire Commander, during the launch of the Command’s Bush Fire Prevention Campaign in Asankrangwa.
ACFO I Ohemeng emphasized the urgent need for a collaborative effort and extensive public sensitization regarding the detrimental impact of illegal gold mining on the operations of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
He called for measures to halt this destructive venture, which is negatively affecting the region’s water resources.
“A worrying concern in recent years is the menace of illegal mining in water bodies which is hampering the operations of the Ghana National Fire Service. When fighting bushfires, waterbodies which serve as reservoirs for continuous supply of water for fighting bush fires and other fire incidents have all been taken over by ‘galamsey’ activities.
“All our rivers have turned muddy. I believe we can do more in terms of sensitization to check this phenomenon”, the fire commander stated.
