‘We’ve lost a beautiful soul’ — Ayew Afriyie, others pay tributes to slain NPP MP

NPP MP for Effiduase/Asokore Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie has joined his colleague legislators to pay tribute to the slain Mfantseman MP, Ekow Hayford.

“Sad News reaching us from Mfantseman constituency. I didn’t know our meeting in Kumasi briefly last Sunday evening was a goodbye one. Ur sense of humour, humility, and strong-mindedness made you simply unique”, Dr. Afriyie wrote on Facebook, hours after the incident.

“We have lost a beautiful soul. RIP bro. We r all down. Thoughts and prayers with the family.
You served Mfantseman and your Country Well”, he added.

The Ghanaian lawmaker was gunned down while returning from a campaign trip on Friday dawn sparking concerns about the growing insecurity in the West African country.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed shock over the killing of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mfantseman, Ekow Hayford, in the early hours of Friday, October 9, 2020.

In a Facebook post, President Akufo-Addo said: “It is a sad day for Mfantseman and for Mother Ghana.”

“I am shocked and saddened by news of the murder of the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Hon. Ekow Kwansa Hayford, by suspected armed robbers in the early hours of this morning. It is a sad day for Mfantseman and for Mother Ghana. My last encounter with him was on 30th June, this year, when I commissioned a water supply project at Anomansa, in his constituency. By all accounts, he wary much appreciated and loved by his constituents, and I expect the police to bring the perpetrators of this gruesome, cruel act to book as soon as possible. My deepest condolences to his family, to the Mfantseman constituency, to the New Patriotic Party, and to Parliament. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the president posted.

Vice Presidential candidate for the opposition NDC Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang also condemned the incident and has called on the aecurity agencies to get the perpetrators arrested.

The opposition party has since suspended all campaign activities in the constituency.
