Social media users have deflated Dr. Kwabena Duffour’s buoyant description of his yet-to-be-launched ‘Ahotɔ Project’ – an initiative by the former Bank of Ghana Governor targeting the grassroots within the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC.

Ahotɔ means “relief” in the Akan language. The pilot phase of the project will be launched at the Ashaiman Constituency in the Greater Accra Region on Thursday 7th April.

A statement from a project manager stated that the former finance minister in the erstwhile NDC government of Professor Evans Atta Mills and a business magnate makes it clear that the main aim of the Project is “geared towards setting up micro-businesses in all the 275 constituencies to create the much needed, but currently unavailable local funding for the day-to-day running of the NDC party at the grassroots level”.

Dr. Duffour also stated in a Facebook post that: “With the NDC Ahotɔ Project, constituency leadership will run rental services for social events and invest proceeds into local party activities. This initiative includes the provision of plastic chairs, canopies and public address systems, to each constituency. I am hopeful that this would advance activities of our local parties as a stable revenue generating venture.”

But some critics, some of whom are sympathizers of the opposition party took on Dr. Duffour, as they questioned the timing of the initiative.

“President Mahama will not do this but he will still be our presidential candidate. Where were you over the past years? You ignored the party. Now because of your personal ambitious aim, you all of a sudden started all this”, a user who gave his name as Beyeti Inusah said.

“Good initiative but you ignored the party sometime ago and allowed your radio stations to speak against NDC, now because of your parochial interest, you are bringing wonderful ideas, well better late than never”, another user, Godwin Cockcrow Awuku also stated.

Dr. Kwabena Duffour is lacing his boots to contest the party’s presidential slot ahead of the 2024 polls. He will face off with the likes of Kojo Bonsu, a former KMA Boss, and former President John Dramani Mahama.
