A Deputy Head of Protocol of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has questioned the silence of two media organizations, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), following a violent attack on a Citi TV reporter by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The distressing incident unfolded during the vetting of parliamentary candidates at the NDC’s Regional Office in South La on October 13, 2023. Akosua Otchere, a female journalist from Citi FM, suffered a vicious assault during the incident.

But Kwabena Frimpong who has since condemned the incident argues that had the situation involved the New Patriotic Party (NPP), there would likely have been significant public outrage.

He is calling for a fair and impartial discourse on such issues, stressing the importance of fostering an environment where matters are deliberated without political bias.

He expressed his thoughts and well wishes for Akosua Otchere and hoped for her swift recovery from the attack. Frimpong called for a media landscape in Ghana that promotes inclusivity, impartiality, and responsibility.

Today, October 13, 2023, an unfortunate incident unfolded at the NDC’s Regional Office at South La during the vetting of parliamentary candidates, where a female journalist, Akosua Otchere of Citi FM, was subjected to a vicious assault. It is deeply concerning that organizations such as GJA and Media Foundation for West Africa, among others, have remained silent about this distressing incident involving the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

What is truly disheartening is the prevailing silence from various quarters, simply because the responsible individuals belong to the NDC. If it had been the NPP, hell would have broken lose by now on us (NPP).

Instead of impartially discussing the matter, numerous media outlets, Groups and self-acclaimed Apostles of all knowing Individuals seem to have been quiet. It is essential that we foster an environment where issues are deliberated objectively and unbiasedly. The Silences of GJA, Media Foundation for West Africa, et al is very worrying when your colleague has been assaulted.

My thoughts and well wishes are with Akosua Otchere, and we sincerely hope for her swift recovery. Let’s all collectively strive towards a more inclusive, impartial and responsible media landscape in Ghana.
