Ghana’s vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has extolled the virtues of the National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

On his 100th birthday celebration, the calm Islamic cleric has been hailed by Dr. Bawumia as “a splendid human being” who has used his influence to foster unity and peace in Ghana.

“Hundred years in the life of anyone is no mean achievement. In the life of the Chief Imam it is been a real blessing to Ghana,” the vice president said of the man he described as “a mentor”.

Dr. Bawumia in a short video to wish Sheikh Sharubutu a happy birthday, said the latter has been a true representation of peace among Ghanaians.

“He has been an epitome of peace. An epitome of Islam. An epitome of tolerance, humility and kindness. With him as national Chief Imam Ghana continues to be a very peaceful country.

“I’m so happy and honoured to have come to know him as a father, he’s a mentor and his outreach to people from different religions shows the sort of unity Ghana really needs and we should cultivate,” he emphasised.

Dr. Bawumia was full of praise for Sheikh Sharubutu for his religious tolerance.

“He treats everyone equally regardless of tribe, religion and he really is a splendid human being. We really thank God for him and may God continue to bless him and give him long life. 100 is just the beginning and we want to see him live another 100 years,” the vice president stated.

A public lecture will be held in his honour today in Accra and the keynote speaker will be Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, United Nations General Secretary’s Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel.

He will speak on the theme “Advancement of modern Ghanaian society through peace, tolerance and development.”

The special guest for the lecture is Alhaji Dr. Bawumia. A number of national leaders, including some former Presidents, are also expected to attend.
